Real Madrid reject €50million bid from Liverpool for future Ballon d’Or winner

Nick Elliott

Cristiano Ronaldo (and the referees) once again grabbed the headlines as Real Madrid swept Bayern Munich aside in the Champions League quarter-final second on Tuesday.

The Portuguese superstar scored a perfect hat-trick (header, right foot, left foot) as the Bundesliga champions failed to cope with just ten men after Arturo Vidal was controversially dismissed late in the second half.

But the best goal of the night was scored by 21-year-old sensation Marco Asensio.

The Spanish youngster has done a superb job of deputising for Gareth Bale during the Welshman’s injury troubles this season.

Asensio scored Madrid’s fourth goal at the Bernabeu, carrying the ball from inside his own half, before toying with Mats Hummels and finishing past Manuel Neuer.

Regular watchers of La Liga have been aware of Asensio’s talent for a while but his goal on the big stage against an opponent of Bayern’s prestige elevated his profile into the stratosphere.

So much so that Madrid have rejected a €50million bid for their wonderkid from Liverpool.

The news was reported on Cadena COPE radio and confirmed by AS with reports from Spain suggesting the bid was rejected instantly.

Zinedine Zidane is a huge admirer of Asensio’s and believes, like many fans across the globe, that he has the potential to develop into one of the very best players in the world.

Bayern’s sporting director Michael Reschke jokingly claimed Madrid “should build a monument” for whoever signed Asensio for just €3.5m from Real Mallorca in 2014.

Despite the bid being dismissed without consideration, Liverpool fans should be encouraged to learn of Jurgen Klopp’s ambition and desire to build his squad in preparation for next season.

The Reds started the season as Chelsea’s main title rivals but fell away as Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane were rendered unavailable through injury and international duty respectively.

This isn’t the first time a Premier League club has had a bid for Asensio rejected…
